Romans 12:1-2

So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. Romans 12:1-2

Random Thoughts

It is Spring Break and I don't have any wonderful pictures to post of a cleaned out closet.  I haven't accomplished anything major like that!  I've been extremely lazy, but that's just what I needed.  I fixed my Kindle, helped L. raise money for Relay, got him wrestling shoes and found shorts for M., worked online and went to lunch with friends.  No major accomplishment, but a good break.  Come to think of it, it really isn't spring yet either (although our allergies would disagree!).  It's only 45 degrees out.

I am so thankful for standing water - the creeks and ponds in the park are full.  For a while we even had puddles!

I am attempting to run again.  It was much easier this time.  I tried it last spring, but it got hot.  Then my running partner moved.  L ran beside me to keep time and for the most part he was encouraging.  Well, except when he pointed out he can walk my running pace.  What do you expect?  He's almost 12 and I'm almost.....

Did I really say he's almost 12?  That means M is almost 14!!  Both born the Thursday after Easter two years apart.  In the evenings, we've been watching old Christmas videos (that and Duck Dynasty).  Oh my!!!  What precious memories.  Cherished times.  It is so wonderful seeing how their personalities have remained the same.  What someone told me is so true - "The days are long, but the years are short."

So we're approaching April and some spring routines or "usuals" are coming....

We'll be celebrating three birthdays soon.  We already cleaned out the front flower beds and I'll get some annuals when my MIL comes.  We're ready for the sprint to the end of school.  The Joplin Memorial Run is soon.

How do you conclude randomness?  That's all?

On the Home Front - March 9

A peek through my window…. Breezy and cloudy.  We’re going to get rain this afternoon.  Spring is coming, but maybe later than last year???????  I was reading back through last year’s posts and saw that last year (two days from now) our neighbor’s tree was white with blooms.  I think I see tiny buds now, but blooms are a ways off.

What’s going on this week… M is registering for NINTH grade.  I can hardly believe it!

What “the boys” are doing… M just left with his dad for the hangar.  Last night, he went to a state semi-final basketball game to watch with friends.  L. is on a Scout campout, but they are coming home tonight so the Weeblos don’t have to take down wet tents.

On my mind… how our boys are changing and growing – interests too.  Playing out in the front yard isn’t something they really do anymore….

On my bedside table…  my Kindle isn’t working properly!  I need to get that taken care of soon!  When we were in Texas last month I bought some non-electronic books at Half Price Books.  I think I’m going to save them for the beach this summer.

I am richly blessed…  to have Hubby.  I’ve had a headache this morning and he spent about 20 minutes rubbing my head for me.

(And I wrote this last month and didn’t ever publish it…)

…….to have spent time with Aunt this week.  She went to dinner with the boys and Thursday night and then to a Bible exhibit.  Last night M. and I helped her get the furniture she wanted and after we ate at our house, we took her home and unloaded the furniture.  Did I mention she bought me lunch on Wednesday and had it at my house during my lunch break?  She stayed after I went back to school and picked both the boys up at their school about an hour and half later.  I ran into a 2nd and 3rd cousin at M’s basketball game this week too.

I’m praying for…  a phone interview for a friend.  A relaxing time away for another friend and her family.

Our home…  the laundry annex is clean (since we may have company for dinner).  Our home is looking forward to some attention while I’m home during Spring Break!

Menu planning… (Also something from last month that didn’t get published…)Something truly amazing!  Yesterday afternoon Hubby and I prepared 10 dinners that we put in the fridge or freezer ready to cook….We had shish-ke-bobs after church today for dinner.  Waiting to in the fridge to cook tomorrow night for dinner is Italian Pork Chops.  We have Chinese Chicken Morsels, Hearty Hamburger Stew, Green Chile Beef Enchiladas, Lemon Chicken, Over BBQ Chicken and Cheese Biscuits, Mexican Roast, Asian Chicken and Stir Fry Veggies and Beef Stroganoff waiting in the freezer.  Woo Hoo!  I couldn’t have done it without Hubby.  His idea and he cut all the vegetables and all the meat!

We haven’t made it to Once a Month Cooking yet this month, but I have things ready for Taco Soup, Smoky Corn Chowder, Farmer’s Casserole, Asian Chicken (again) and a couple of other things that I can’t remember right now.

A photo or two… I haven’t taken many lately so these are oldies, but goodies!

On the Home Front - Only One of January (sigh)

A peek through my window…. much greyer than earlier today, but for January, there is nothing to complain about.  The tree in the front yard has some buds on it.

What’s going on this week… basketball game, I WILL make it to church Wednesday night and Sat., Hubby and I are going to do some “once a month cooking” together.

What “the boys” are doing… I’m not sure – it’s way too quiet J.  They are probably doing something electronic.  This morning, one of the boys and Hubby went flying.

On my mind… as I head into the second month of the new year, I need to get areas in my life in better balance.  Work has taken up too much of my mental energy lately.

On my bedside table…  I got three or four new books on my Kindle and I can’t wait to sit down with it after dinner and decide which one I’m going to read!

I am richly blessed…  with a lovely home and time to spend here.  I’m thankful for M’s basketball team and his invitation with friends.

I’m praying for… for the same friend who is still in a storm of life. Also, for summer and next fall plans and that my children will desire God more than anything.

Our home…  since the last time I wrote a daybook, we’ve added some living room furniture – a coffee table and two recliners.  It makes the room feel more homey and it gets used more often now.  Even though, I slept in late today, I’ve managed to get the house looking pretty tidy.

Menu planning… Hubby made minestrone soup last night; tonight is chicken/broccoli, stuffing and salad.  Later this week: meatloaf & mashed potatoes, chicken lasagna, beef chili and breakfast for dinner (on the night Hubby is teaching of course!)

I Couldn't Say It Better

When I finally got around to actually asking God for a word for this year, I felt him say "Hope".  Guess what He said to my sister?

Yes, the same word!  She actually blogged about it.  Twice!  I'm just giving you the links because she said it well.  Please go there!

Reindeer Pictures

This past week at school, I read The Wild Christmas Reindeer by Jan Brett.  If you haven't made it a part of your Christmas reading for your children, you should.  It's a wonderful story with a sweet message about being gentle instead of bossy.  We used it to analyze the main character, Teeka; found common and proper nouns in the text;  did a logic exercise to line up the reindeer; and made an art project of a reindeer head.  I told my class I'd show them my reindeer pictures so here is my way to easily do that.  When I was uploading the pictures, I realized that I must have been enamored by the reindeer because I had a lot pictures of them!  We were in a national forest in Ketchikan and while the boys were ziplining through the trees, the girls took a little forest tour.  This animal spot also had a bald eagle and owl.  The last picture in this set has info. on reindeer.  Merry Christmas and Happy Reading!

The 12 Pictures of 2012

For our Christmas letter this year, I am posting pictures from each month of the year. For more family highlights (if you're interested) click on posts on the side bar of my blog for each month.

This year has had its ups and downs with me working again (2nd grade - lots of changes to teaching!) and my sister's cancer treatment (she was actually cancer free 5 years in May - this is a new unrelated one).

Through it all, God continues to remain faithful and sustains us with His presence and peace.

We give Him thanks for our time together and all our wonderful friends and family.  Through it all, we remain richly blessed!

Hubby and I went away together in January.  We spent a few days in Tampa and saw friends (and "met" a new one - Winter of Dolphin Tale).  This is Hubby with our friends (he was in our first youth group!) after we had dinner on the bay.  I was safe from the pelicans since I took the picture!

Every February, we visit family in Texas.  This is what the boys spend a lot of time doing there!

L. received his Arrow of Light award from Cub Scouts in March.  He's active in a Boy Scout troop now.

Easter was on M's 13th birthday this year and Hubby's family from ABQ came to visit.

We went to Joplin in May.  It was the one year anniversary of the devastating tornado.  Hubby ran the half marathon and L the 5k.

Our family vacation was with friends on a cruise to Alaska in June.  We spent time in Portland with them afterwards too.  This is the four of us in Ketchikan.

This is what the boys and I were doing literally RIGHT before finding out Aunt's leukemia diagnosis.  Hubby had church meetings at a resort in Missouri.  We left early for me to be with Aunt - Hubby took the boys to a local water park.  Aunt is 2/3 finished with treatment now.

M is an 8th grader this year and L is a 6th grader.

My niece was born in September!  Everyone in the family says this was the highlight of the year (vacation was a close second.)

We went to Kansas City in October for fall break.  Hubby has a friend he runs marathons with.  We enjoyed eating at an Austrian restaurant with them and then the four of our family attended a large downtown church before going to the Market and coming home on Sunday.

We had a pretty low-key Thanksgiving and I loved it that way!  The next day, Aunt helped us decorate for Christmas and Hubby and I did some shopping together.  We all actually REALLY took time off and it was a nice break.

I hesitated using this picture because the boys have already changed so much!  But, it's the best family picture we have of the year.

Merry Christmas from Our Family to Yours!

On the Home Front - Thanksgiving Eve

A peek through my window…. it’s dark now.  It was 76 degrees at one point today.  We’ve been commenting that 12 years ago when we came here for Thanksgiving and Grandpa took M. to sit in his work truck that it was below freezing!

What’s going on this week… it’s mid-week.  Tomorrow is Thanksgiving (parade, dinner and Cowboys game).  Friday, we’re putting the tree up and J. is getting groomed. L. has a wrestling tournament Saturday.  I’ll probably break down and look at my lesson plans, but only because I love the online planbook.

What “the boys” are doing… much to my dismay, they are in the living room wrestling.  I’m sure someone is going to whine or cry or both soon.

On my mind… how selfish I am at times and how the overwhelming things I have going on are more manageable now.  Even if not, others have far more to deal with on a daily basis.

On my bedside table…  Talk of the Town is what’s on the Kindle right now.  If Hubby doesn’t go to bed when I do, I turn Pandora on on the bedside table.

I am richly blessed…  to have such beautiful weather right now for so late in November, for finding some “new” clothes today, that we were able to take Aunt to her last chemo of 2nd round (one more to go) and to have my family at home right now.

I’m praying for… for a friend who is going through a storm in life right now.  I love her dearly and wish I could do more, but have been greatly praying for her whole family.

Our home…  The “laundry annex” (aka the dining room) must be cleaned out before Thanksgiving dinner!  Our home has stayed somewhat together this week – oh wait, that must be because it’s only Wednesday and not the weekend.  Am looking forward to having Christmas lights only on in the house.  I love the look and feeling when everyone is asleep, it’s quiet and I just watch the lights.

Menu planning… We had tacos tonight and while I was cooking I browned hamburger to use for chili on Friday (Mom’s this time).  We’re having turkey and ham both tomorrow and other stuff J.

A photo or two…
